Lyrical Knits
Mary has lived in Western Massachusetts (United States) for almost thirty years and enjoys cycling, gardening, traveling, and of course knitting. Although she learned to knit and crochet as a child, she is largely self-taught. She knits continental style, because she holds the thread just as she does when crocheting. In her student days, she wanted to make an Icelandic sweater herself, because buying one was too expensive. So she started knitting more intensively and constantly adjusting patterns. Eventually, she started making her own designs, mainly thanks to requests from others who wanted to make her own sweaters. Her background in mathematics and science comes in handy: she uses algebra and geometry daily to calculate patterns, especially for shawls and garments in multiple sizes.
She started out mainly designing sweaters, but has continued to develop in fits, sizing, and colorwork. Mary is inspired by the geometric designs of Wooly Wormhead, the colorworks of Unwind Knitwear, Casapinka, Andrea Mowry, Boylan Knits, Stephen West, Lisa Ross (Paper Daisy) and Hohee Locatelli. She admires these designers for their unique styles and perspectives.
Mary considers herself a kind of “knitting engineer”: her love of knitting, combined with her mathematical background, results in patterns that are both aesthetically and technically well thought out.
